Meditation has a long history on this planet. It seems that many people know of and associate meditation with Buddha and Buddhism. Others know it through Hinduism, but the truth is meditation is in one form or another in every spiritual system on earth. There are so many different forms and so many different experiences to be had through these varying forms.
Because meditation is associated with different religions it is misconstrued as religious. Nothing could be farther from the truth. It is in all religions because it has been found to be an effective tool for individuals to connect to higher states of being. To become more open, receptive and present to the reality of the moment. When one is more present in the moment, one has greater sensitivity and capacity in both the realm of spirit and in the realm of the material world.
Buddha did not start Buddhism. Buddha taught meditation, which has religious affiliation. Anyone from any religion, or from no religion can meditate. How do you meditate? Like I said earlier, there are many forms and many ways. There is guided meditation for relaxation, guided meditation for healing, guided meditation for insomnia, breathing techniques for anxiety, spirit guide meditations, loving-kindness meditation, guided meditation for children, guided mindfulness meditation and much much more.
How to meditate really comes from the first step, which is choice. Knowing what it is you want help with is the springboard from which you can choose where to start on the path of meditation. There are many books to read and many talks to go to, but the best idea is to find someone who can help you understand where it is best for you to start, whether that be guided meditation for healing or guided mindfulness meditation or some other form. And with this guide you learn how to meditate properly and then practice, practice, practice. And remember, always be kind to yourself.
